A child needs more than a meal.
Elpida is a child development programme. We stay with children from crèche to high school through learning, nutrition, sport, counselling and mentorship giving them the tools they need to break out of poverty for good.

What we run
Five things a child needs. We run all of them.
You cannot fix a childhood with one intervention. Every thing a child in the Valley is up against, we have something running against it and the five work together, every day.
Ages 3–6 · Blanco & Golden Valley
Elpida Crèche
A WCED-approved Jubilee Curriculum delivered through structured, play-based learning, with two nutritious meals a day. We build social and emotional growth and school readiness not just a place to sit.
Ages 7–14 · Academic support
Education Support
Four classes Reading, Maths and one-on-one academic assistance for children who have fallen behind in a classroom of sixty. Literacy and numeracy, taught at the pace a child actually learns.
Social development · Trauma-informed
Counselling & Wellbeing
Trauma-informed care that fosters healing and resilience: restoring identity in Christ, and giving children the emotional ground to flourish in learning and in life.
Ages 6–18 · Five indoor sports
Indoor Sport
A safe, supervised indoor facility with structured programmes in indoor hockey, 5-a-side soccer, basketball, netball and tennis building teamwork, discipline and health.
Every day · Two meals a day
Nutrition
Daily meals that prevent stunted growth and give children the foundation to grow, learn and thrive. Delivered with Love Looks Like Something, our outreach arm.
Coming next · What we are building
The Horizon
Separate Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools focused campuses, gender-specific mentoring and role-model leadership, plus a School of Skills pathway into work.
A week at Elpida
Every day, a child gets the whole programme.
No child should have to choose between a meal and a lesson. Our programme is built so that nutrition, education, sport and wellbeing happen in the same week, in the same place.
Monday to Friday
Lessons in reading and maths, one-on-one academic support, and a hot meal for every child who comes through our doors.
Every day
Two nutritious meals. Good food is not a side-issue; it is what makes the learning possible.
Every week
Mentorship, Bible study and the Friday youth programme role models who stay.
As needed
Trauma-informed counselling, one on one, in a room built for it.
Every weekend
Sport and recreation at the indoor facility structure, teamwork, and a reason to look forward to Saturday.
Always
Building the schools, the Hub and the homes so that in ten years a child does not need us.
Why it works
Presence, sustained, changes outcomes.
43%
Higher lifetime earnings, 30 years after early childhood support.
Gertler, Heckman et al., 2021
76%

U.S. National Institute of Justice

Better attendance and outcomes where children are fed.
WFP, 2020
13%
Annual return per child on quality early childhood work.
Heckman, García et al., 2018
Why George, why now
George’s Gini coefficient is 0.61 among the most unequal in the Western Cape and murder likelihood rises 1.6× for every percentage point of youth unemployment. A child without a pathway is a child at risk. That is the gap this programme exists to close.

Our story
From one sandwich to a school.
Elpida did not begin as a charity handout. It began with a relationship and as that relationship grew, so did the work.
2020
One sandwich, one child
Love Looks Like Something began feeding children in Golden Valley. One plate at a time a family was reached and a relationship was built that goes far beyond a meal.
2026
The Renewal Hub
Open since July 2026 at AGS Elim, Blanco, on a twenty-year lease. Crèche classrooms, teaching rooms, counselling rooms and an indoor sports hall under one roof. Somewhere a child can find every afternoon.
Next
Schools of their own
Separate Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools with a School of Skills pathway into work, and new hubs beyond Blanco. Meet a child at two; walk with them to eighteen.

Our outreach arm
Love Looks Like Something.
Elpida grew out of Love Looks Like Something, which started in 2020 with one sandwich for one hungry child. Today LLLS is our outreach arm it runs the daily feeding programme and the community relief work across the Valley.
Elpida is the child development organisation: the crèche, the classes, the counselling, the sport and the schools we are building. The two work side by side one feeds and reaches a community, the other changes what a child is able to become.
